Vita Ex Vita
Life generates life.
This painting speaks of transformation, renewal, and evolution—not only in the biological sense, but in how we grow and adapt through time, experience, and challenge.
It depicts a new bird, a blue heron, emerging from the mouth of an older heron. This is a metaphor for evolution, but also for reinvention—for those moments when something inside us must change shape to face what lies ahead.
Like a snake shedding its skin, the new bird appears in different colors, as if this new form is better suited for what comes next. The older heron doesn’t resist the transformation. It allows itself to open, to release, to give birth once again.
From within its chest, a heart appears—not a literal one, but a symbolic heart, pulsing from a dark space full of stars. From that heart blooms an auricula flower—a blossom associated with resilience, love, memory, and the delicate strength needed to thrive in harsh conditions. Beside it, branches of the ipê-amarelo (yellow trumpet tree) begin to sprout. The ipê is deeply rooted in Brazilian identity and symbolism. It’s a sign of renewal after hardship. It blooms at the end of the dry season, when all else seems barren. A reminder that beauty can emerge from adversity—that cycles bring rebirth.
Surrounding this transformation are several birds. Some are watching, others singing, like guardians or companions of the metamorphosis. They seem to acknowledge and celebrate the change as something sacred.
In the background, a bromeliad anchors the scene. In Brazil, this plant symbolizes welcome, protection, and resilience. It grows in unexpected places and thrives by holding water, creating small ecosystems within itself. A fitting metaphor for nurturing life from within.
Vita Ex Vita is about allowing the new to emerge—not by forgetting who we were, but by transforming from it. Carrying the past, while letting it open the path toward what is yet to come.
